The Tommy DeVito era returned to MetLife on Sunday, but it doesn’t look like the third-string quarterback who won the hearts of fans last year is going to save the New York Giants’ miserable season.
That was confirmed in the Giants’ Week 12 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who routed the Giants 30-7.
And when Baker Mayfield took the ball into the end zone for a 10-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, he celebrated by doing DeVito’s signature hand gesture. The celebration was brief, but the dig was clear.
That gesture was one of the pinnacles of the DeVito craze last season when the New Jersey native stepped up and won three games in a row for a struggling Giants team. His Italian heritage was celebrated by fans looking for a little bit of levity amid a bleak season.
But a year later, things are looking even more dismal, and DeVito’s own celebration is being used to mock him.
DeVito, 26, played three seasons at Syracuse University, taking over as Orange quarterback after Eric Dungey. DeVito was eventually replaced by Garrett Shrader and transferred to Illinois for his final college season.
DeVito finished Sunday’s game 21-of-31 passing for 189 yards and had 32 yards rushing on 17 carries. DeVito was under pressure all day and was sacked four times by the Bucs.
Meanwhile, one of DeVito’s teammates at Syracuse in 2020 and 2021, Sean Tucker, had a 1-yard touchdown run for the Bucs on Sunday. Tucker rushed just three times for four yards and had one catch for seven yards.
